Earth Box™ Garden 2009

Since the first year's "crop" was a success a different "crop" was planted in early 2009 consisting of tomatoes, potatoes, and collard greens. The potatoes are being grown in a 5 gallon bucket and can be viewed on this page: growing potatoes in a bucket. The collard greens were planted on one side of one of the Earth Boxes but they soon began to outgrow their surroundings and threaten the growth of the nearby tomato plants. Therefore, the collards were moved off to another more spacious container where they can spread out.

The tomato plants were left by themselves in one Earth Box and the other Earth Box was planted with the remaining plants. In all there were 18 plants purchased on sale at our local Wal-Mart Garden Center. The plants soon became too large for the patio and proved too cumbersome in rolling in and out on the wheeled Earth Boxes. To remedy this we designed an outdoor shelf that would hold the plants and withstand the Florida weather environment. Below you can see the finished shelf project:
